Conservation areas can be an absolute minefield of rules and regulations when it comes to changing your windows. With the majority of windows in an conservation area being wooden windows. It is common that timber sash windows are the hardest timber windows to pass inspection. Although the basics of a timber sash window remain the same, (dependent on the era and the joiner who made the timber sash windows) things like profiling and meeting rail sizes will vary.
Now a days most timber window manufacturers only reproduce one style of wooden window profile, a standard Ovolo. Also they fall short on only working to strict CAD drawings and restrict themselves with strict mullion and jamb sizes, leaving them effectively only being able to make one type of wooden window. This is however no use if you own a listed property or even live inside a conservation area, as you replacement timber windows will have to go back to the exact same detail as your original timber windows. So unfortunately if your meeting rail on your timber sash window is an 18 mm lamb tongue detail, then it will have to go back as an 18 mm lambs tongue detail.
This is however where we have the advantage! We have a wide stock of moulding cutters and along with our high expertise in timber window making we can match any wooden windows like for like. If we don't have your timber window profile, we can guarantee to match it thanks to the advances in spindle moulding tooling. We can also run internally or externally glazed wooden windows/doors. Single glazed or double/triple glazed profiles with traditional casement mortice locks to full multipoint locking systems are available.
Our knowledge and craftsmanship may be focal in having your new windows passed by your local authorities. The image to the side is of a project we recently completed in Guildford. We was asked by our customer to replicate their original wooden windows but bring them up to modern standards. Our new timber windows were completed with double glazed units also full espag locking system for extra security. Because the property was a basement flat we even added trickle vents to help with their air flow problems.
